Overview
Situated right where UC Davis' campus meets downtown Davis, our signage, STOP HOP & SHOP, invites students, residents, and out-of-town visitors to explore downtown restaurants through a fun game of hopscotch. Additionally, it congratulates people for biking and lists some fun facts about Davis’ biking history to further encourage sustainable transportation.
The problem
Focusing on 3rd and A St. in Davis, CA. My teammates and I wanted to bring to life this bike rack area; in addition, we wanted to use this as an opportunity to create something that would encourage and celebrate sustainable transportation in the city of Davis.

The Solution
In order to do this effectively, we incorporated seven types of signages into our project, "STOP HOP & SHOP". The seven signs were a directional sign, identification sign, orientation sign, celebratory sign, interpretive sign, regulatory sign, and recognition sign.

The process
Phase 1: Identifying our target audience
To begin our environmental graphic design signage, my team and I visited the site, conducted interviews and short surveys from individuals that regularly pass through 3rd and A street. Through this data, we identified our primary audience, UC Davis undergraduate students, and secondary audience, families. In addition to this, our data confirmed that this location was a popular social spot.
Phase 2: Identifying the anatomy of our signage
-
Orientation sign: Downtown Davis map, used to amplify nearby business restaurants
-
Celebratory sign: Congrats for biking sign, used to celebrate and perpetuate sustainable transportation.
-
Bike education signage – to encourage sustainable transportation
-
Interactive signage – to perpetuate the social aspect of our location
Phase 2: Identifying our theme
The signage's name, "STOP HOP & SHOP" was born when my team and I decided that we wanted to explore the theme of play and interactivity. Given that our signage would be placed in a social spot, it only made sense that we add to this by giving our target audience an opportunity to interact with their environment and further spark socialization.

Well, how does the game work?!
-
Find a small object (such as a rock, scrunchy, coin, key) that one can use to throw for a quick hopscotch game!
-
Once you have landed on a food pictogram refer to our map signage, where you can find a key box embedded with restaurant options relative to the pictogram the player has landed on!
-
Use our map to find your way to the restaurant!

Thank you!
Many thanks to my teammates, Mario and Abby, for creating this wonderful project with me! I'd also like to thank professor Tim McNeil at UC Davis, for guiding us with feedback and support during this quarter long project!
